Jesus Christ, the coming Lord | Week of December 4th

Jeremiah 23:5-6, “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgement and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: the Lord our righteousness.”

From the sermon series: Promise and preparation

In this passage, the prophet Jeremiah is speaking in God’s name. The fifth and sixth verses come after the Lord reprimands the shepherds, who have scattered the flock instead of bringing them together. These shepherds were the leaders of that time who were supposed to be tending to God’s people. However, instead of just criticizing the leaders, the Lord also speaks of hope for the future

The King who “shall reign and prosper,” the one who Jeremiah prophesizes, is Jesus Christ. He was the only one who could bring true judgement and righteousness to earth. He was the leader that the world needed. This is still true for us today. While we may have earthly leaders and rulers, Jesus needs to be the ruler of our hearts. Only by believing in and following Him can we be made righteous in God’s eyes.

Is Jesus the ruler of your heart? How does allowing Him to guide you provide you with hope?
