Why do we offer and sacrifice? | Week of July 9th

Genesis 28:22, And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.

From the sermon series: Expressing our gratitude

In this chapter of Genesis, Isaac sends his son, Jacob, to another land to find a wife. On his travels, Jacob has a dream in which God promises that the land on which he was sleeping would be his and that through him, his family and all others on earth would be blessed. When Jacob awakes, he recognizes the holiness of the place where he is, and makes his own promise to accept God and make offerings to Him.

When we recognize the promises that God has made for our lives, what do we do with them? Do we forget them or do we allow them to give our life a purpose? Because God is unchanging and always true to His promises, then we can have faith that they are something that we can depend on. His promises for us are something that we can build our lives on, knowing that they will be fulfilled one day. But let us also respond with our own promises to God, as Jacob did. We can make offerings to Him out of gratitude for His promises, and we can promise that our lives will bring Him glory and will be used for His purposes.

How can you help remind yourself of God’s promises for your life? How can your life glorify God?
