The way of Jesus’ baptism | Week of March 18th

Luke 12:49-50, I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!

From the sermon series: The new creation within us

When we read Luke 12, we can see that it is filled with teachings of Jesus about what it means to be His disciple. For the last ten verses of Luke 12, Jesus is starting to prepare His disciples for when He would no longer be on earth.

Jesus understood what He must go through in order fulfill His Father’s will – He would have to suffer and die in order to save mankind. While Jesus did not wish to die, He accepted that this was the way things needed to be, and He worked towards that goal. When we are faced with suffering for our God, do we accept it and work towards the goal? Or do we try to change the situation so that our suffering goes away? As His disciples, we will encounter suffering. Jesus Christ Himself said this. But let’s look to Jesus as our example. When faced with this suffering, we want to continue working towards doing the Father’s will.

Journal Prompt: It’s not easy to just accept suffering and keep working towards the Father’s will. What can you do to help yourself through these moments of suffering, to encourage and strengthen you?
