Visible and invisible | Week of May 6th

Colossians 1:16, For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

From the sermon series: Christ, the Lord of life

In this section of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we can read that Jesus Christ is the personification of God. With these words, we understand that Jesus is God, and therefore shares in His creative powers.

When we recognize that Jesus has a hand in creation, and has authority over creation, we are acknowledging another element of His divinity as a Person of the Trinity. In Colossians 1:17, it says, And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. This means that Jesus Christ existed before the world was made. Once the world was made, it is through His power that everything is held together. The universe is sustained through Him. So when we reflect on nature and other aspects of creation, and give God praise for it, we also want to see the power of Jesus Christ.

Journal Prompt: How does knowing that Jesus Christ is the Creator and Sustainer of life help you to understand Him better? How does it help you to better understand His life and sacrifice?
