The way to fellowship with God | Week of November 11th

John 14:3-4, And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.

From the sermon series: The return of Christ

These verses in John 14 come from what is known as Jesus’ farewell discourses. It is in these farewell discourses that Jesus prepares His disciples for His death on the cross.

After Jesus tells the disciples that He will prepare a place for them, Thomas asks Him how they can know the way to this place. Jesus’ response is one of His seven “I AM” statements: I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6). With this statement, Jesus set Himself apart from everyone else. In the Greco-Roman world where Jesus lived – a world that accepted all kinds of new religions, many gods, and many ways to get to those gods – Jesus’ exclusive statement was troubling for many. For His disciples, including us today, these words of Jesus Christ strengthen and edify our faith. Jesus is the one and only way to the Father. There is no other way into the presence of God than by accepting Jesus Christ’s death as payment in full for our sins.
