Jacob and Esau
GENESIS 25,27
Isaac
and Rebekah married and had twin sons. The first son to be born was named
Esau; the second was named Jacob. When the boys got older, Esau became a
hunter, but Jacob was quiet and liked to stay at home.
Once Esau came in from a long
hunting trip. He was very hungry. He smelled the wonderful red stew Jacob
was cooking. "Give me some of that stew!" Esau bellowed.
"First give me all your rights as
the firstborn son," replied Jacob.
"I will," said Esau, "Just give
me some stew!"
So Esau gave his birthright to
Jacob for a bowl of soup.
Years later, when Isaac was about
to die, he called for Esau so that he could give his older son a special
blessing. Rebekah loved Jacob and wanted Isaac to bless him instead. While
Esau was out in the field, she got some of his clothes. She put them on
Jacob and covered his hands and neck with hairy goat skin, because Esau was
very hairy, but Jacob’s skin was smooth. Then she sent Jacob in to Isaac
with some of Isaac’s favorite things to eat.
Isaac was old and blind, so he
asked, "Who is there?"
Jacob answered, "Father, I am
Esau, your son."
When Jacob knelt down in front of
his father, Isaac felt the hair on his skin and smelled his clothes. "Your
voice sounds like Jacob’s, but you feel like my son Esau." Then he blessed
Jacob with a great many things, because he thought Esau was kneeling before
him.
When Esau came back from the
field, he too brought his father a good meal. When Esau realized that Jacob
had tricked their father and stolen his blessing, Esau was furious. He
planned to kill Jacob, so Rebekah told Jacob to run away to her brother,
Laban.
