Rebekah and Isaac
GENESIS 24
Abraham’s
son Isaac grew up to be a fine man. When Abraham was old and near death, he
called to his most trusted servant. "Promise me that you will go back to my
country and find a wife for my son Isaac among my own people," Abraham said.
"What if the woman won’t come
back with me?" the servant asked. "She may not wish to travel so far from
her home."
Abraham told him, "If she won’t
come with you, you will be released from your promise to me."
"I promise to do as you ask," the
servant said.
The servant traveled a long way
to Abraham’s homeland. He prayed, "Lord, God of my master Abraham, I hope I
have not come all this way for no reason. I am standing by a spring. When
the young women of the town comes here to get water, I will ask each if I
may have a drink. May the one who offers a drink of water to my camels, too,
be the wife for my master’s son."
Before he had finished praying, a
beautiful girl named Rebekah came to the spring. He asked her for a drink.
"Of coarse, my lord" she said. "May I get water for your camels, too?"
When the camels finished
drinking, the servant thanked her and said, "Please tell me who your father
is."
"I am the daughter of Bethuel,"
Rebekah replied, "and Laban’s sister"
"This woman is Abraham’s
relative!" thought the servant.
The servant saw that Rebekah was
the one the Lord had chosen to be Isaac’s wife. He went to meet her family.
He told them about the promise he had made to Abraham.
"I will go with you and marry
this man, Isaac." Rebekah told the servant. She said good-bye to her family
and climbed up on to one of Abraham’s camels. So the Lord granted Abraham’s
wish for his son and answered the servant’s prayer.
