Jesus Calms
The Storm
Mark 4
When Jesus taught people, he
often told them stories called parables. Sometimes the people listening to
him did not understand what the stories meant. Even his disciples would
become confused, but Jesus explained his stories to them when they were
alone.
Once, after a long day of
teaching, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side of
the lake." Jesus wanted to get away from the crowd and have time to explain
his words to his disciples, to rest, and to pray.
So they left the crowd behind
and got into a boat. Jesus quickly fell asleep on a cushion in the stern.
"Master, Master, wake up!"
shouted the disciples. "Do you want us all to drown?" A terrible storm had
come up while Jesus slept, and the waves were so big that they were coming
over the sides of the boat. The disciples were terrified.
Jesus calmly sat up and said
to the wind and waves, "Quiet! Be still!" and the wind and sea were
completely calm. As the boat rocked gently on the water, Jesus turned to his
disciples and asked, "Why were you so frightened? Don’t you have any faith?"
Then the men were even more
afraid. They asked each other, "Who is this man? Even the wind and the water
do his bidding!" And they continued to follow and learn from the Master.
