Jesus Walks
on Water
Matthew 14
After Jesus had finished
speaking to a large crowd of people, he said to his disciples, "Go down to
the boats and cross to the other side of the lake." They left him, and he
sent the crowds home. When the last stragglers were gone, he went further up
the mountainside to pray. The day had been long and tiring. He had taught
the people, performed miracles, and fed thousands of people. He needed some
quiet time to talk to his father.
When he finished praying, he
went down to the shore, but the disciples’ boat, driven by strong winds, was
already a long way from the land.

Very early in the morning,
Jesus went out to them. The disciples saw him walking on the water and they
were terrified. "It must be a ghost!" one of them cried.
"Don’t be afraid!" Jesus said.
"I am no ghost – I am Jesus, your teacher."
"Lord, is it really you?"
asked Peter. "If you are real, ask me to walk out to you."
"Come," Jesus said.
So Peter climbed out of the
boat, gingerly put his feet in the murky, green water, and soon he was
walking across the waves to the Master! Suddenly, terror seized him. He saw
the storm clouds in the sky and heard the crashing waves, and his faith
failed him. He began to sink. "Lord, save me!" Peter shouted.
Jesus reached
out his hand to Peter and pulled him up out of the water. "Why did you
doubt?" Jesus asked him.
They climbed
back in the boat, and the water was quiet. The disciples were amazed. They
worshiped Jesus and said, "You are the Son of God."
