The First Disciples

Matthew 4, Mark 1

One day Jesus was walking by the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The shoreline was packed with fishing boats, and the men in the boast were hard at work cleaning their nets, preparing to go back out to sea, or gathering their catch to take to market. Jesus saw all of this.

Two men, Simon, who was sometimes called Peter, and his brother Andrew, were casting their nets.

Jesus watched the two men for a moment, and then said something that changed the men’s lives. "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men!"

Peter and Andrew had fished since they were boys. Fishing was all they knew. What did this man mean when he said he would make them "fishers of men?" Something about him made them want to follow him and find out. Maybe they looked into Jesus’ eyes and saw great wisdom and kindness there. Maybe his voice echoed not only in their ears, but in their souls, stirring dreams and plans that they had never dared to think about before. Whatever the reason, they dropped their nets and left their boat behind them.

Tow other brothers, James and John, were nearby fixing their fishing nets. "Follow me," Jesus said. Just like Peter and Andrew, they listened. They followed. And their lives were never the same.
