The
Transfiguration
Matthew 16, 17; Mark 9; Luke 9
After witnessing Jesus’
miracles and signs, the disciples were at last beginning to realize that
Jesus was God’s Son. One day at Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his
disciples, "Who do people think the Son of Man is?"
The disciples replied, "Some
people say John the Baptist is the Son of Man. Other people think it is
Elijah, or Jeremiah, or another prophet."
"Who do you think I am?" Jesus
asked.
Peter answered, "You are the
Christ. You are the Son of God."
"You are blessed, Peter,"
Jesus said to him. "This was revealed to you by my Father in heaven."
From then on, Jesus began to
explain to them what must happen. "Soon I must go into Jerusalem," Jesus
said, "and there the Jewish leaders will give me to the Romans to be killed.
On the third day after my death, I will be raised again." The disciples did
not understand him. Peter was especially confused. "Surely this won’t happen
to you!"
Six days later, Jesus took
Peter, James and John with him up on a high mountain. Before their eyes,
Jesus was changed. His face shone like the sun and his clothes became
dazzling white. Then Moses and Elijah appeared beside him and talked with him.
Peter was amazed. He said,
"Lord, this is a good place for us. Let us stay here. I will build shelters
for each of you and –"
Suddenly a bright cloud
surrounded them. They heard a voice say, "This is my Son. I love him. Listen
to what he says."
The disciples fell on the
ground, but Jesus touched them and said, " Do not be afraid. Get up and walk
back down the mountain with me."
They saw that Moses and Elijah
had disappeared. Jesus said, "Don’t tell anyone what you have seen until I
have been raised from the dead."
