A true servant's choice | January 16

“Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
1 Kings 3: 9  NKJV

When young King Solomon dreamed that the Lord would grant his wish, he didn’t hesitate; he requested an understanding heart. This answer pleased our Heavenly Father, and He replied, “Because you gave this answer, I will fulfill your wish. You will be filled with wisdom and I will give you more; I give you honor and riches” (v. 11-13, paraphrased). Both of these things came to pass. If Solomon had been interested only in his own advantage, if he had sought wealth and fame, would the outcome have been the same? God wanted to know what lay in the heart of this man, if he was truly aware of the importance of his task to lead the people of God.

Imagine today, if we had that opportunity, what would be our choice? Would we say, “This is the most important thing in my life, that I do the work of God. I will do my very best to be a blessing for others and to help that everyone comes to completion”? For this task we need a heart that is filled with Godly understanding and an awareness  of the needs and sorrows of those around us.

CONTEMPLATION:
Christ taught us to love our neighbor as ourselves.  Our Chief Apostle Leber once asked, “Who is your neighbor?  Anyone who needs you.”

How are you currently serving your neighbor?
