The Watchman of our hearts | January 23

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4: 23  NKJV

The actions and thoughts of a human being all have their source in the heart. We can easily find examples in Scripture of those who did not diligently keep their hearts from evil—Cain, Esau, and Judas come to mind—, and this always had consequences from which we can learn. To “keep your heart with all diligence” requires effort. Let us keep our hearts from envy, annoyance, and hatred; from looking only at momentary needs and “selling off” our childhood in God; from arrogance and conceit; and from becoming earthly-minded and losing contact with the altar. We must rather see and think in spiritual terms.

It is wise to examine what sort of spirit is seeking to enter our hearts. We should think of the end result—what will come of this? If we notice a certain weakness, let us pray for strength and the right thoughts. We are children of God and carry the Holy Spirit within us; if we allow ourselves to be led by Him, our Divine Guide, He will keep us from evil. Let us therefore make the Holy Spirit the watchman of our hearts.

CONTEMPLATION:

In Matthew 6:21 it says “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  How does this verse tie in with “keeping our hearts”?
