Forward, not back! | January 30

“But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.”
Genesis 19: 26  NKJV

In this familiar story, God planned to destroy the city of Sodom. Before He did that, however, in His loving kindness He sent angels to allow Lot and his family to leave the city and escape the destruction. There was one warning given: Just go—don’t stand still and don’t look back! At one point Lot’s wife turned around and looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. Why did she look back, and why did God give such a harsh punishment?

Lot’s wife disrespected and disobeyed the word of God—the cost was her life. If we should allow this to happen to us, it could cost us our spiritual lives. She had a connection to the sin of that city; today we could also find ourselves bound by any number of sins: hate, jealousy, arrogance, or even a lack of neighborly love. Perhaps she was a bit afraid of the future, leaving familiar things behind. In our time it is so important to be full of trust and confidence in our God. Then His blessing can accompany us; He will guide us and we do not have to be afraid.

Do we strive to look forward to the glorious future prepared for us? Or are we tied down by sin and always looking back?

Take time this week to thank God for His forgiveness and for the hope of our future with Him.
