The depth of love | May 7

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

John 15:13  NKJV

We often ponder about the suffering and death of the Lord. The Lord Jesus took all of this upon Himself out of compassion for us sinners. It was out of love for us human beings that He gave His life.

The events surrounding Jesus’ passion radiate a greatness which we must call to mind clearly again and again. The Lord Jesus knew what was about to happen. He was aware that a difficult time lay ahead of Him and that it would mean His death. When He fought His inner battle in the garden of Gethsemane, He said: “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” (Mark 14:36 ) This gives us an idea of just how difficult this step really was even for Him, and how He surrendered Himself to the will of God.

How hard is it for me to surrender my own will and replace it with God’s, with even small decisions in my life?

Do I feel the weight of my sins that Christ carried to the cross every time I am forgiven?
