Continual renewal | June 18

“And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”

Ephesians 4:23  NKJV

Each year, there is a constant renewal in nature. We have all experienced this. The trees drop their leaves, and new leaves come up in spring. There is a permanent cycle of renewal. Should the renewal fail to appear—if the tree would no longer produce any leaves—we would consider the tree dead!

Likewise, if we are not renewed, we may become “dead.” Apostle Paul speaks of the old man that has to be put off and the new man that has to be put on. (Ephesians 4: 22-24) This is a lifelong process. The strength for such a renewal is available; the Holy Spirit can and will renew us. He will also endow us with this strength. However, this does not mean that renewal happens, as it were, “automatically.” We can be renewed by virtue of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. This is not a unique, occasional occurrence, but a permanent, recurring task.

A constant renewal is required in many things. Let us consider firstly our peace and love to those around us. How about our joy and assurance of faith? Our entire commitment is needed to enter a cycle of renewal.

Are we willing to make the sacrifice of being constantly “renewed in the spirit,” even if it is at times a painful process?
