Your King is Coming! | Week of December 9th

From the sermon Series: Preparation

Your King is Coming!

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Zechariah 9:9

This verse is among many prophetic messages that foretold the coming of a Messiah—a powerful message to the Jewish people. This particular prophecy is fulfilled in Matthew 21:1-11 and John 12:12-19. The fulfillment of these kinds of prophecies brings a level of credibility to the Biblical narrative by tying things together and providing evidence of the truth in its claims.

Today, you can still find relevance in this text because it teaches about the nature of the Messiah, and how to approach Him. Firstly, you see in this text, words like “rejoice,” “shout,” and “behold.” These words may make you think of Advent. They are the way to celebrate the redemption of Christ Jesus—with enthusiasm, with praise, and with direct focus.

The verse also speaks of the character of Christ. He is just in nature, and He alone is the access to salvation for man. Though He is perfect and holy, He humbles Himself, embodying lowliness and humbleness.

How can you prepare yourself at the heart level for His arrival?

  • He alone must be Lord over you. Let Him define all your thoughts, words, and deeds.
  • Strive to show others the level of grace you have received.
  • Serve others in humbleness and lowliness, not as a sign of weakness, but as a sign of inner wealth.

In what parts of your life do you still sit on the throne, instead of making Christ Lord?

What are the desires that you cling to that prevent you from letting Christ take the wheel?
