Taking Stock | Special New Year’s Eve Edition

Thoughts from Chief Apostle Schneider’s year end message

Taking Stock

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39

It is often tradition to look back on a year as it comes to a close, reflecting on results or profits and taking stock of both achievements and failings. If you try to take stock of your relationship with God in this way, you will find a messy report. Despite any level of dedication one can give to God, you will not remain untouched by evil, nor will all your efforts to do good be met with success.

Taking stock in this way is not valid or helpful considering the nature of God and His gifts to His children. Much of the blessing you receive from God is spiritual in nature and cannot be measured by reason. It is also important to note that God is eternal, transcendent of time and space, so His activity cannot be measured in years.

So, how can you reflect on a year of relationship with God? This reflection should focus on the love of God mentioned and described in Romans 8:38-39. A few of the qualities of this love include:

  • The love of God is a free gift that you could not possibly be able to earn.
  • The love of God is steady, constant, and unchanging. It is unaffected by your mistakes and imperfections.
  • The love of God is a powerful force that cannot be broken down.

May you find great joy as this year closes with the certainty that you are loved by God, and may you enter this new year strengthened by His love.

Spend time reflecting on how you experienced God’s love in 2013.

Offer a prayer of praise and thanksgiving for the “love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Blessed New Year!
