Progress in faith

1 Timothy 4:13 & 15, “Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.”

The book of Timothy is a letter from Paul to Timothy. Timothy was a bishop in Ephesus and was expected to be an example of faith to his people. Among many instructions for Timothy we find these verses from 1 Timothy 4, that offer Timothy a framework for leading a healthy spiritual life. Later in the letter at the end of the chapter, Paul explains that by being faithful through these practices he will save himself and those who hear him.

All that being said, the instructions of this passage are not exclusively for an ordained church leader, but are extremely important for all Christians to practice. Because in doing so, we can discover the depths of salvation and share our discoveries and experiences with others.

While many things can be added to this list a few key aspects to focus on can be found in 1 Timothy 4:13 and 15:

  • Reading the Bible
  • Encouraging and building others up
  • True doctrine and teaching
  • Meditation

Maybe some of these instructions are new things for you. Find a time and place to focus on each of them at least once in the next week.
