Sharing the cup | Week of April 3rd

Luke 22:17-18, Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

From the sermon series: Passiontide

This Bible passage speaks to when Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper. One aspect of Holy Communion is fellowship, and when we participate in it, we have fellowship with Christ and our fellow believers. By taking communion together, we are publicly professing our faith in the authority of Jesus. There is significance to this. It means that when we say we are Christians, we can’t then go and live an un-Christ-like life because nobody will know any better. When we proclaim our faith in front of others, it means we have to prove that we live what we believe.

In the same instance where we make this public proclamation and commit ourselves to living out what we believe, we also gain the courage to do so. Through Holy Communion, we see that Jesus Christ is present in His church today and He can be our rock and strength in all that we do in life.

Next time you celebrate Holy Communion, focus on the profession you are making in front of your congregation as you accept the wafer and say “Amen.”
