A house of prayer for all nations | Week of April 10th

Mark 11:17, Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’”

From the sermon series: Passiontide

This verse in Mark 11 is when Jesus is cleansing the temple. He drove out those who bought and sold in the temple, He overturned the money changers’ tables and the dove sellers’ seats, and He forbade people to carry wares through the temple. Jesus wanted the temple to be restored to its original, greatest intent: a place to pray to, learn about, and worship His Father.

Think about your own life. Have there been moments or places that were once reserved for God and are now focused on earthly things? Maybe your morning prayer time has been replaced with checking the news? Maybe the church, where we go to worship God and hear His word, is more thought of as the place where you get to catch up with friends? From this Bible passage, Jesus reminds us that things created for God should remain that way and not be interfered with by earthly matters, so that we may grow in our relationship with Him.

Is there something in your life that you had once reserved for God, but now it is reserved for something earthly? What steps can you take to once again return it to a moment or place that allows your relationship with God to grow and flourish?
