The future of God’s children | Week of July 29th

1 John 3:2, Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

From the sermon series: The church of Christ

In this chapter of John’s letter to the early Christians, he writes about being children of God and the importance of love.

1 John 3:2 reminds us that we are children of God. And while we will only discover the fullness of what we shall be in the future at the return of Christ, as God’s children, we can understand some of the characteristics we are to have already today. Of these, love is the most important. Throughout 1 John 3, we read of some ways we can demonstrate this love. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren (1 John 3:16). Let us love not in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth (1 John 3:18). When we live with a love like this, it is evidence that the new creation is emerging within us, preparing us for when we are in eternal fellowship with God.

Journal Prompt: What does it mean to you that you are a child of God? What can you do now to prepare for your future with God?
