The help of the Holy Spirit | Week of September 23rd

John 14:26, But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

From the sermon series: The Creed

In John 14, Jesus is speaking with His disciples. In this chapter, He promises that the Father will send the Holy Spirit when He has ascended (John 14:16-18).

Jesus used the word “Helper” to describe the Holy Spirit. The Greek word for “helper,” parakletos, has the meaning of “one called to stand alongside” to assist during a struggle. The Holy Spirit would intercede on Christ’s behalf to sinners and to the Father for sinners. Therefore, Jesus literally meant that the Father would send one like Him, who is called to stand alongside disciples of Jesus, whose role is to support them during struggles and impart strength. We are reassured that, as members of the Body of Christ, we can count on the help and support of Jesus Christ through the activity of the Holy Spirit.
