Most holy faith | Week of October 28th

Jude 20-21, But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

From the sermon series: Preparation for the divine service for the departed

Jude’s letter to the early Christians warns them to be aware of and guard themselves against false teachers. Verses 20 and 21 encourage them to do this by making their faith a strong foundation.

When our faith is in God, we can build our lives and be assured that our foundation can never be shaken, broken, or removed. It is only when we find ourselves putting our faith in other things – luck, money, power, success – that we don’t have the certainty of a solid foundation. With faith, we know that God is who He says He is, that He loves us, and that He keeps His promises. Because we know these things about Him, we also know that He is the only foundation we want for our lives, and we continue to build on this foundation through prayer and by dwelling in His love and mercy.

Journal Prompt: Reflect on the lyrics in the hymn, “How firm a foundation” (185 in the hymnal). Looking at these lyrics, how do we know that our foundation in the Lord is firm?
