Love your enemies | Week of February 24

Matthew 5:44-45, But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

From the sermon series: Preparation for the divine service for the departed

These verses in Matthew 5 are part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where His teachings reveal the kingdom of God and what truly matters to Him.

If you read Matthew 5, about halfway through, you’ll notice that Jesus starts each focus point with the words, “You have heard that it was said…But I say to you….” In this section of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is pushing those listening to do more than what they had previously heard or followed as the law or standard. You have heard that is was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, love your enemies… (Matthew 5:43-44). In our lives, we see and exhibit many behaviors, actions, and responses that are considered standard and acceptable in society. As Christians, if we come across an opportunity to encourage, or show love, or serve, let us go beyond the standard. As disciples of Jesus, we can take His teachings to heart and live out the gospel in a more authentic way.

Journal Prompt: Read Matthew 5:21-48. What new understanding that Jesus teaches is something that you would like to work on this year?
