Jesus, the firstfruits of those who sleep | Week of April 13

1 Corinthians 15:20, But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

From the sermon series: The firstfruits of the resurrection

In this chapter of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he writes to them about the truth of Jesus Christ, specifically His resurrection and what that means for all believers.

The ancient Greek word for “firstfruits” is aparche, which translates to, “to offer firstlings or firstfruits.” When you look through the Old Testament, you can find further meaning to this word. For instance, in Leviticus 23, God tells His people to celebrate the Feast of Firstfruits, where the Israelites are to offer a bundle of grain from their harvest. As an offering, this grain also represented the anticipation of the rest of the harvest. When Paul tells us that Jesus is the firstfruits of the resurrection, we can understand this to mean that He is an offering to God on behalf of our sins, and that one day, we will also resurrect with Him into new life.
