Belief in the resurrection | Week of April 20

John 11:25-26, Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

From the sermon series: The time after Easter

When Jesus says this “I AM” statement, He is with Martha talking about the death of her brother Lazarus and her belief in Him as the Son of God. Later in the chapter, Jesus raises Lazarus back to life.

Jesus identifies Himself as “the resurrection and the life.” He is not just the giver or the conduit, but rather Jesus, Himself, is the divine life that has come to the world to make resurrected life possible. He is the reason that we will rise on the last day, and He is also the reason that a life spent believing in Him will not be interrupted by death. The power of life and resurrection is here and available now, in the person of Jesus. By faith in Christ and through the power of His Spirit, we can have new life. Paul reminds us of this in his letter to the Corinthians: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). Faith in Christ makes abundant life possible – eternal life that transcends death.

Journal Prompt: Read John 11. What can you learn about Jesus from this chapter?
