Death and resurrection | Week of May 4

Romans 6:4-5, Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.

From the sermon series: Living by the resurrection

Paul’s letter to the Romans reveals the basics of being a Christian, and in these chapters around Romans 6, he gives us a clearer idea on what it means to be dead to sin and to have new life in Christ.

When we decided, at our baptism or in our Confirmation vow, to put our faith in Jesus Christ, this means that we are dead to sin and have new life. This doesn’t mean that we can no longer sin; of course, we still sin. Yet, because our trust is in Jesus and His victory on the cross, this means that sin no longer has power over us. We now make the decision if we will sin or walk in the newness of life that we have through Christ.

Journal Prompt: What can you do to help yourself choose to walk in the newness of life when you are tempted to sin?
