The development of the new creation within us | Week of May 11

2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

From the sermon series: Living by the resurrection

We find this verse in 2 Corinthians under the heading, “Be Reconciled to God.” The whole chapter points us towards this goal.

When a verse starts with “therefore,” we must look at the preceding verses in order to understand its meaning. With confidence in the fact that we have eternal life with God, it is the love of Christ, who made this future possible, that compels us to act as the new creation, to love all people equally as He does. We do not judge others by their assumed “worth” in this world, but by the worth that is assigned to them by God, demonstrated by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross to save all people. This leads us to 2 Corinthians 5:17. If anyone who believes in and professes Christ, he is made new. His old nature is dead, and he desires to continue to transform into the nature of Christ.

Journal Prompt: Read 2 Corinthians 5. What verse or verses stick out to you, and why?
