Hallowed be Your name. | Week of September 7

Matthew 6:9, Hallowed be Your name.

From the sermon series: When you pray…

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus began His teaching on prayer with the words, “And when you pray…” before explaining a few ways how not to pray. Then He gave His followers a model prayer, the Lord’s Prayer.

This first petition of the Lord’s Prayer is about God, and it brings His holiness and goodness to our attention. It is both an acknowledgement of and a resolution to keep His name holy. By praying, “Hallowed be Your name,” we are saying that we want God to be honored and treasured above all other things in the world. How is this accomplished? The rest of the Lord’s Prayer gives us the beginning of an answer. We do His will in order for His name to be hallowed. We ask for daily bread so that we have the strength to uphold godly principles and values, all so that His name can be hallowed. We seek forgiveness for our sins so that His name can be hallowed.

Journal Prompt: What does it mean to you to treasure the name of God? What is one thing you can do every day this week to bring honor to His name?
