Matthew 7:12, Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

From the sermon series: Learn from Me...

In this last portion of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs His followers on how to treat others. He sets up the Golden Rule in Matthew 7:12 with the explanation that as sinful human beings, even parents know how to give good gifts to their children. God, our Father, who is perfect, will therefore give many good things to those who ask (Matthew 7:9-11).

Jesus teaches us to love others as He loves us (John 13:34). We cannot love exactly as God loves because He is the very embodiment of love. It is not an emotion that He turns on or off depending on who He is dealing with – God is love and He offers His love freely to all. Because God has shared His life with us through the gift of the Spirit, we can strive and grow to love in the manner that He loves. We grow in this love by treating others in the way we would like to be treated – with dignity, grace, inclusion, and care.
