Who do you say that I am?

Divine service theme for the month of November "Who do you say that I am?"

Our theme for November is taken from a conversation Jesus had with His disciples. In Matthew 16, Jesus asks them what people were saying about Him. They respond, “..some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:14-15).

Just like today, people that knew of Jesus questioned His identity, authority, and claims. Throughout November, we’ll focus on some realizations and roles of Jesus that He also wants us to acknowledge today, responding to His question, who do you say that I am? The title of each service answers the question.

The bride of Christ is seeking to understand their bridegroom. For a disciple of Jesus Christ, it is important that we don’t just know of these roles intellectually, but also respond to these realizations and roles with worship, obedience, and dependence. Who do you say Jesus Christ is? If we respond to that question with the various titles from the Sundays in November, would we be telling the truth? Do our lives (actions, thoughts, motives) answer the question for us?

The last month of our liturgical calendar always focuses our attention to the future. Growing in our understanding of these roles of Jesus strengthens our desire to be with Christ in His fullness of glory, leading to the plea, “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).
