I Am

Divine service theme for the month of April: "I Am"

The month of April begins with the culmination of Holy Week; on Good Friday we are called to follow Jesus on His path of suffering, and on Easter we celebrate His resurrection.

With the season of Eastertide, we will enter a series that focuses on a few of the seven “I am” statements of Jesus found in the Gospel of John (See John 6:35, 8:12, 10:7, 10:11, 11:25, 14:6, and 15:1). These words refer back to Old Testament passages where God speaks about Himself; most notably in Exodus where He says to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14, see also Isaiah 45:5 and 48:12). In using a similar phrasing, Jesus identifies Himself with God, revealing His divine nature and introducing Himself as the One sent by God.

No one metaphor completely captures who Jesus is. Each illuminates some aspect of His identity and expresses the saving relationship of Jesus to the world. This is the basis of our hope and certainty that Christ shares His victory with human beings.
